Interested in all the new things in SP2? Here is a complete list.
And this is the complete download site with links for the SP2 itself, a new BOL, new Samples, new Feature Pack and especially the links to SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Add-in for Microsoft SharePoint Technologies and SQL Server 2005 Data Mining Add-ins for Microsoft Office 2007.
To avoid a restart after the installation of the SP2 you should stop the neccessary services which could be done with the following commands on the command line - if you have used the standard instances:
net stop MSSQLSERVER net stop MSSQLServerOLAPService net stop msftesql net stop MsDtsServer net stop ReportServer
After the installation the "SQL Server 2005 User Provisioning Tool is started automatically if you use Windows Vista. As you probably know, Windows Admins are not automatically also SQL or AS Admins - this tool enables to set the right privileges to the administartor accounts.
But do not forget to start the services before you try to set the privileges...
If you want to add a new account you will have to start the Provisioning Tool again, but unluckily it is not added to the Start Menu, you will find it at: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Shared\SqlProv.exe - assumed that you have a standard installation and an english version of MS Windows Vista.
As posted nearly a month ago, Microsoft announced some usefull tools for Lotus Notes and Domino Migration.
The Microsoft Application Analyzer 2006 for Lotus Domino is now available for download - there is a seperate whitepaper, which explains the usage of the tool.
Extract from the website: "The Microsoft Application Analyzer 2006 for Lotus Domino is a tool that helps organizations to analyze their Lotus Notes/Domino application environment. It generates reports based on a number of application properties such as last accessed/modified dates, template types and the presence of workflow. Based upon the reports generated by this tool, customers can quickly identify applications that should not be migrated (such as administration applications or unused applications), applications that can easily be migrated to Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) templates and applications that require additional analysis."
Without Office 2007 (Office 12) having hit the market you could use this for BI... But please regard that this download is available at a Microsoft website but is not a supported product, it is just a demonstration - but it is a really good one!
Business Intelligence Portal Sample Application for Microsoft Office 2003
Extract from the website: "The business intelligence portal sample application for Microsoft Office 2003 is an integrated, customizable, multilingual, Web-based OLAP solution that enables employees in an organization to create and share structured views (OLAP and Relational) and unstructured views (Documents and URLs), based on various data sources, such as SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services, offline cube files, relational databases, SQL Server Reporting Services reports, spreadsheet data files, XML Web services, XML files, and any requested URL. The business intelligence portal is entirely built on top of Microsoft Windows® SharePoint® Services. It extends Office Web components capabilities, and uses SQL Server Reporting Services. The BIP Viewer is a smart Web Part that can show multiple views from multiple sources and filter data based on Web Part connections with other Web Parts such as the Business Scorecard accelerator. The business intelligence portal also contains an add-in for Office 2003, that enables end users to consume reports and OLAP-based views (charts and PivotTable reports) directly into Microsoft Outlook®, Microsoft PowerPoint®, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word documents. This can streamline their daily work, and enhance their business productivity."
Microsoft has announced the realease of some new tools targeting Lotus Notes and Domino Customers, this is the english press-release and this is the german one.
I think there is a very interesting description of the following two tools:
- Microsoft Application Analyzer 2006 for Lotus Domino.
This tool, available in the first quarter of 2006, will significantly improve the process of analyzing a Notes/Domino application environment and provide a framework for making recommendations to transition those applications to the Microsoft platform.
- Microsoft Data Migrator 2006 for Lotus Domino.
This new tool, available in the second quarter of 2006, will allow organizations to migrate data from Lotus Domino template-based applications to Windows SharePoint Services Application Templates.
The Care Management reference implementation for MS Office 2003 contains sample code, templates, and guidance that demonstrate the possibilities in using the Microsoft Office System to address critical business issues.
Extract from the website: "Intended for developers and IT implementers, this download of sample code, templates, and guidance demonstrates one possibility for implementing a solution to extend care management programs to more members using the Microsoft Office System. The content provided with the reference implementation illustrates how to use Microsoft Office InfoPath® 2003 XML-forms to streamline task management and to utilize Microsoft Office SharePoint® Portal Server 2003 to implement a unified process and documentation approach."
This download is related to the MS Healthcare initiative, which can be found here.
Sorry, German only...
Die Slides von den "SharePoint Technologies Day 2004" in Fürstenfeldbruck stehen online zum Download zur Verfügung.
James Milne provides two very intersting Sharepoint Solutions on his page.
First the SharePoint Style Designer, where you can test you designs online while seeing the effect of changes directly.
Second the SharePoint Page ToolBar, which will enhance the usability and look & feel of your SharePoint pages.
Brian Rogers provides an article which describes an unfortunately unsupported way for the fact, that that authenticated users granted Reader access to a SharePoint site also have access to the Site Settings page without having the appropriate rights, which could lead to unnecessary questions and therefor to administrative overhead.
MS provides a download for the "Everyday Productivity Education", which is a bunch of information included in an intranet site to get your SharePoint project started. Not technically, but for your users.
This bunch of information could bring up a lot of user acceptance, but you really will have a lot of work with customizing the documents.
Extract from the website: "The Everyday Productivity Education (EPE) demonstration allows navigation through the Microsoft EPE intranet site. Content includes Best Practices, Getting Started, Learn More, Selection, and Reference guides. This is a self-guided demonstration—no script is provided. To implement the Microsoft IT core EPE offerings on your corporate intranet, download the EPE intranet site demonstration and expand the .zip file by double-clicking the compressed folder.
The editable content is in the EPE Docs folder. If you choose to use these documents, each must be edited to fit your corporate environment and technologies. Pages contain placeholders indicated by bold and italicized Times New Roman font—for example, “(Please insert URL or information here).” In addition, images marked with “Example” must be replaced with relevant images."
Tom Rizzo has changed jobs at MS converting from a SQL guy to the Office group and he also had to change the blog.
As first real post in his new blog Tom provides a real cruel gift for Sharepoint 2003 - 157 pages of free content and the code samples!
Have a look, download and enjoy!
Michael Washam posted an article on MSDN named "How to Write a Back Up and Restore Application for SharePoint Portal Server 2003" to provide a GUI for the backup and discovery tools.
Extract from the website: "The SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore utility is the SharePoint Portal Server tool you use to back up and restore sites created with SharePoint Portal Server 2003. You can access this utility from the SharePoint Portal Server group on the All Programs menu, on the server running SharePoint Portal Server. For information about backing up and restoring sites created with SharePoint Portal Server 2003, see the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administrator's Guide."
You will find the Download here.
Extract from the website: "The SPSBackupSample in this download (SPSBackupSample.exe) includes programmatic steps and code to demonstrate how to backup and restore all SharePoint Portal Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows® SharePoint Services sites in the server farm. The code shows how to write a backup and restore application for SharePoint Portal Server 2003, and to perform Web Storage System backup for backwards-compatible Microsoft Exchange Server document libraries"
MS offers Solution Guides regarding several important topics in the medium-sized business.
Extract from the website: "The Medium IT Solution Series is designed for growing businesses that are progressively increasing the use of IT to empower employees and connect with customers. The solution series provides greater flexibility in terms of IT design and the number of supported users. The solution series is intended for medium-sized businesses with 50 to 250 users."
The link above includes all solutions and guides.
I personally just needed the Medium Business Solution for Collaboration Services v 1.0 at the moment and it provided good tipps.
Extract from the website: "This solution provides guidance that can be used to plan, build, deploy, and operate collaboration services in the medium IT environment. It provides guidance on deploying Windows® SharePoint™ Services-based intranet and extranet Web sites and publishing the Web sites to the Internet. This enables users to remotely access these Web sites over the Internet using a Web browser."
Jan Tielens has posted a great article about referring to content of a SharePoint List From Another Site without a line of code.
